The initial idea of producing a home-brewed beer arose from the concern of two friends from Xàtiva-Valencia-Spain to create something new. Rafael Suñer, who has his own bar and organizes events, and Sergio Iborra, director of Cominiqualis – Advertising agency became friends more than 20 years ago. It is very common for them to meet over a beer.

In July 2010, in one of these meetings, they came up with the idea of creating a beer of their own brand very related to the region they live at. They needed to create something autochthonous that would catch future consumers’ attention. After an intense brainstorming, not exempt from some irrationalities, they came up with the idea of “We have to create an outstanding beer, a beer that would be “mel de romer” (“Rosemary Honey” in Valencian). This is a very typical valencian expression which is used when something is outstanding, sublime.

So they started investigating the possibility of creating a custom beer with rosemary and rosemary honey. As a matter of fact, the rosemary is a native plant of the Mediterranean region and it is very common to use it as a spice or to give aroma to paella.

After contacting several brew-masters they came to the conclusion that it was finally possible to create a home-brewed beer with rosemary essence and rosemary honey. The process started and the beer La Socarrada came into being, the first home-brewed beer from Xàtiva.

Lastly, the name of the beer comes from both, the smoky color, and also because of the name of the inhabitants of Xativa, the “Socarrats”, which means “the burned”, due to the fact that Felipe V burned the city of Xàtiva in June 1707.
