Kokoloco began in 2004 with a small Salsa class of 6 students taught from the Seniors Centre in Turner. Each week the class grew, and each term a new style or level was added, first Salsa then Merengue, Tango and our famous Reggaeton! Class sizes grew quickly and the studio began to spread through local performances, our own Latin events and word of mouth.
By 2006 our first website was launched and we were teaching from five different locations in the inner north suburbs of Canberra, some more presentable than others! After two years of stacking chairs, sweeping floors, dealing with double bookings, listening to Chinese Karaoke before class and sneaking cookies after, we started looking for a permanent studio location. In January of 2007 we moved into 32 Colbee Court in Phillip, where many more great memories were made and the studio really started to take shape.
Over the next four years Kokoloco saw the addition of many talented new instructors, new dance styles, large scale Latin events, performance teams in almost every dance style, and national recognition at Latin festivals and congresses for performances, workshops, DJs and party reputation!
In 2009 there were many changes with the launch of our second website and fresh new image and marketing approach, including television and radio commercials, with more classes in Gungahlin, Belconnen and the City, helping the studio to grow to more than 500 students.
In 2011 we moved into our beautiful new studio in Colbee Court, offering more classes and performance teams, weekly Latin social nights, more events and workshops.
In 2012 we launched our new website and we brought interstate instructors to enhance the level of salsa not only in kokoloco but in canberra. Kokoloco took teams to various events around australia gaining national recognition and recieved great feedback from the live audiences as well as on you tube.
In 2013 we have launched our new 8 week terms and are looking forward to taking canberra's latin dance scene to the next level.
